Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

This book has been on my list for a while and I finally read (and loved) it! It is set in the fictional utopian community called Shaker Heights, a perfect and progressive suburb of Cleveland Ohio in which the successful and wealthy Richardson family live, and let out a house nearby. A single mother, Mia, and her daughter Pearl move in to the house and quickly form relationships with the Richardson family, having moved around a lot and never really felt settled anywhere until now. The economic differences of the two families are stark - the Richardsons live a life of luxury and privilege and have want for nothing but the family is fragmented, whilst Mia and Pearl have minimal possessions and often struggle to get by but the love and warmth of their unity shines through.

Elena Richardson lives a life of perfection and order - and when an old family friend decides to adopt an abandoned Chinese-American baby, a custody battle ensues which involves Mia on the opposing side, leaving the town in a dramatic divide. With Mia and Elena, Elena decides to delve into the secrets of her mysterious tenants' past, and uncovers some disturbing truths. This was such a gripping read and there are so many twists and turns in the plot which really keep you on the edge of your seat - I was holding my breath! I absolutely loved this book and it addresses questions of race, class and societal hierarchies. My only wish is that the book was longer - I really wanted to know more about what happened and a little extra depth, and I feel it could have been taken a little further by Ng. Overall, I’d highly recommend!
