Kalama: Tome 1, Retribution - Thomas Crowther

I was kindly gifted this debut novel by colleague and friend Thomas Crowther, the author of Kalama. Fantasy is not a genre I would normally reach for, however I thoroughly enjoyed the novel and have been left on tenterhooks for books two and three of the trilogy (currently in the works!).

The novel begins as General Niasma has just killed the king, his nephew, and crowned himself Emperor. The world Crowther has created is based on inhabitants each harbouring power over one of the four elements: earth, air, fire and water. The people of Kalama are divided into tribes based on their element, using their skills to enhance both their hunting and their livelihood.

It quickly becomes apparent that Niasma somehow has control over all four elements - which is unheard of - and he aims to remove anyone from his path who does not conform to his tyranny. Niasma is particularly interested in discovering the whereabouts of Erix, our primary protagonist, though Erix remains unaware as to why he’s being targeted.

Erix’s parents have been captured and held hostage by Niasma, leading Erix, along with a group of friends, to embark on a perilous journey to discover the secret to Niasma’s extraordinary power in order to defeat him and save his family. The group must face as series of trials, based on the four elements, in order to reveal the truth, and battle numerous deadly creatures along the way.

This novel, in my opinion, would primarily fall into the category of YA but is also suitable for adults. I’m fairly new to fantasy (I’ve read the LOTR and Harry Potter but not much else!), and the style of Crowther’s writing was really accessible for me. There’s a sizeable character list and lots of new language to get your head around, but it’s not so complex that you find it arduous.

This novel is full of adventure, excitement and action, and you can tell the author has spent a lot of time and thought on the development of this dynamic world. Reminiscent of Tolkien and Rowling, this would also be great for Marvel fans (in my opinion!), and I’d really recommend it, particularly if you want to support a new author!
