Anne of the Island - L. M. Montgomery

The third book in the Anne series, and this one was as charming as the previous two! Anne of the Island follows Anne and her friends Priscilla and Gilbert as they embark on their next chapter at Redmond College. Leaving Green Gables is a source of great heartache for Anne, but when she and her closest girlfriends move into the charming house Patty’s Place, she is as happy as can be.

Anne is faced with new challenges as an adult, with close friends and schoolmates becoming engaged and having children. She is the recipient of a few ridiculous proposals herself from unwarranted beaux, and her declining of these is most hilarious. Finally, one rainy day whilst out walking Anne is faced with a handsome stranger, Roy Gardner. Roy is the perfect example of her dream man - but is he really the one for her?

This novel transports you back to the lush and enchanting Prince Edward Island (which I would love to visit!) and the quaint, wholesome life of Anne and her dearest. Montgomery’s prose once again astounds me - she was so ahead of her time as an author and this book provides the familiar witty social commentary and dry sense of humour.

If you haven’t yet read any of the Anne books, I implore you heartily to reconsider! They truly are the most heartwarming stories filled with idyllic landscapes and the warmth of glowing sunshine (a line Anne may well say herself!) and I continue to be just as in love with this plucky protagonist as ever!
